Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is regularly ranked as one of the world’s top 100 higher education institutions. The University has 41 000 students and 7 500 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into ten departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1900 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics.

Type of employment: Limit of tenure, 4 years.

The work tasks are primarily research and teaching on basic and graduate levels, with at least 75% research and supervision of PhD students. The teaching comprises courses on all levels within the field, as well as supervision of bachelor and master students. The proportion between teaching and research can change over time and other duties can be included.

The successful candidate will participate and contribute to the research in particle physics, especially dark matter related data analysis together with the rest of the Lund-ATLAS team. A participation in the Lund contributions to the ATLAS upgrade, to meet the future extreme beam intensities, is also possible. He/she will in addition to the research at the LHC, prepare for next generation of dark matter related experiments, e.g. for direct or indirect observations, if possible also through technical development for future detectors with these purposes.

The successful candidate should also develop how today’s knowledge on dark matter can be integrated in the courses we give, harmonised with the courses given by theoretical physics and astronomy.

The successful candidate will supervise students on bachelor and master level, supervise PhD students and post-doctors, develop his/her pedagogical skills and teach physics at both basic and advanced level.

The teaching will increase to a 25% level during the four years. Participation in outreach activities is included in the work.

The successful candidate is expected to be an active researcher in this field. This includes applying for external financing of the activities and to develop collaboration with other research units at the university and with other organisations working on similar research topics.

A person who holds a doctorate or a qualification equivalent to a doctorate shall be qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than 7 years before the last date for application.

A PhD or an equivalent qualification in Experimental Particle Physics and a few years of relevant post-doctoral experience, are specifically required for this position.

Competence in programming in C++ and with working with Linux systems are required.

Basis of Assessment
The key criteria for a successful candidate is experience from experimental research in accelerator-based Particle Physics, in particular at hadron colliders at the highest available energies.

The proposed research programme is used as part of the assessment of the applicant´s research potential.

Experience with international collaboration and leadership skills are given a high weight in the evaluation of the candidates.

A successful candidate should have demonstrated interest in working with students, and should have successfully done so. Interest in outreach, is highly valued.

The essential criteria for the position are scientific and pedagogical skills, with a large emphasis on the scientific skills.

Potential to strengthen the interdisciplinary area between particle physics and astronomy is highly valued.

Potential to obtain in the future external funding for research, from national and European research councils, is given special weight.
