Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 42 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) is an international and interdisciplinary centre of excellence at Lund University. We advance knowledge on how to catalyse the transition to low-carbon and resource efficient economies across different levels of governance and management. We conduct research across the themes of international and national policy intervention, urban governance and experimentation, business management and practice, and consumption governance.

Subject description

Sustainable consumption is a vital part of a sustainable society. Therefore, new ways of providing, consuming and using goods and services on the market need to be explored. In this respect, the emerging concept of sharing economy holds promise to improve efficiency of resource use and reduce the demand for natural resources, and, at the same time, create new jobs and new sources of income to people. However, these promises are rarely tested and supported by objective evidence. Most of extant evaluations of the sharing economy analyse sharing in one sector or focus on one of the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic or social. The multi-sectorial and multi-dimensional implications of the sharing economy and the rebound effects of consumption are still poorly explored.

The post holder will contribute to two on-going projects on Urban Sharing and Urban Reconomy, which explore environmental, economic and social effects of sharing.

 Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The applicant will work in the area of systemic sustainability evaluation of innovative business and consumption models in the sharing economy. The evaluation shall combine analyses of sustainability profile of urban sharing organisations in different cities around the world with assessment of direct and cross-sectorial economic, environmental and social effects. An illustrative generic question could be: what resource re-allocation is induced when consumers shift from using hotels to using accommodation sharing, e.g. AirBnB? This implies investigating direct and indirect environmental effects, e.g. changes in emission levels and the demand for natural resources, effects on industry, e.g. expansions or contraction of some sectors, as well as social implications, e.g. shifts in employment opportunities across the economy.

The applicant might be invited to teach and supervise MSc students and write research proposal(s) on topics related to her/his research. The applicant will be engaged in collaboration with different stakeholders and in organising field work. Administration related to the work duties listed above might be included.
