Job assignment

Peptide-lipid co-assembly is an important phenomenon of high relevance for peptide biomaterials as well as atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. However, the properties and formation of this co-assembly is not well understood. The overall aim of this project is to better understand the underlying molecular mechanisms behind this and its structural and functional consequences at a molecular level.

You will be developing and using super-resolution fluorescence microscopy techniques to better understand the basic mechanisms for the co-assembly. The job assignments will be mainly experimental, but will also include development of software for image and data analysis, and be combined with other techniques such as hydrodynamic trapping.

We are currently recruiting multiple PhD students, with different expertise, to this project and you will be part of a peptide-lipid co-assembly network of students and researchers at the divisions of Physical Chemistry (http://www.fkem1.lu.se) and Biochemistry and Structural Biology (http://www.cmps.lu.se/biostruct/) at Lund University. Qualifications

The applicant should have a MSc or MEng in physics or chemistry, or a similar degree on advanced level. Documented experience in building and using fluorescence microscopy, including single-molecule and super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, is a merit. It is important that the applicant has a documented ability to be able to readily acquire new techniques and knowledge. Furthermore, experience in working with lipid bilayers, protein aggregation, image and data analysis and development of new biophysical techniques is also a merit. Other important personal qualities of the applicant are to be structured, independent, perseverant and energetic. A good understanding of both written and spoken English is a requisite. Excellent communication and presentation skills are also essential. The candidate should have the ability to work in a team and collaborate with people from complementary disciplines.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
