The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics.

Researcher position in temperature measurement of liquid fluids in spray systems
The proposed research work consists in determining the temperature field of heated liquids and spray systems using a method which combines two-color LIF thermometry together with Structured Laser Illumination Planar Imaging (SLIPI).
The work will focus on:

  • Determining adequate temperature sensitive dyes for various solvent (water, ethanol, Bio-diesel etc)
  • Finding an adequate and reliable calibration strategy
  • Deducing the precision and accuracy of the 2D temperature measurement
  • Applying the approach for real case of GDI spray thermometry

The work will focus on both Macroscopic imaging (clouds of already formed droplets) and Microscopic imaging (in the spray formation region, near the nozzle tip).

The development of a new imaging concept will also be initiated.  The idea consists in imaging in 3D the liquid surface temperature by using fairly high concentration of dyes together with structured illumination using back fluorescence detection.

Required competences
The candidate should:

  • Have an extensive knowledge on temperature sensitive dyes for liquid thermometry
  • Have already worked in the field of spray imaging and be familiar with the problems related to the detection of multiple light scattering.
  • Have already tested and evaluated the precision and accuracy of various temperature dependent liquid dyes using two-color LIF.
  • Have strong Matlab skills

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
The research is in many aspects interdisciplinary and therefore a broad competence and experience from relevant areas of physics, spectroscopy and optics are valuable. The research is very international why international experience is of value. Attention will also be paid to good co-operative ability, drive and independence and how the applicant through his experience and competence can help build and strengthen the current research area at the institution.
