Traffic micro-simulations and surrogate safety studies with focus on vulnerable road users

Subject description

Lund University, Department of Technology and Society, Division of Transport and Roads, has a very long tradition of working with surrogate safety measures and behavioural observations in real traffic. The Swedish Traffic Conflict Technique developed here, is one of the most validated surrogate safety tools available. In the recent years, much efforts have been put into development of technical tools to detect and analyse safety-critical situations (video-analysis algorithms, fall detectors, etc.) as well as further development of theoretical underpinnings for surrogate safety research.

We now have a large material on conflicts and normal interactions (individual trajectories), potentially very valuable for calibration and validation of micro­scopic models used for surrogate safety studies. As a concrete example, in a recent Horizon 2020 project InDeV (www.indev-project.eu), conflicts and interactions between motor vehicles and cyclists/pedestrians have been collected at 25 inter­sections in 8 European countries, all supported by video recordings.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The foreseen research issues to be addressed during the post-doc time cover:

  • Broader discussion on applicability of the available microscopic traffic models for simulation of safety-critical events - can traditional models be ”adjusted” or are special ”emergency”-models necessary?
  • Specific examination of the models for vulnerable road users, and how they can be combined with car-models and used for surrogate safety studies
  • Calibration and validation of models based on available interaction data from the InDeV-project.
  • Examination and enhancement of indicators to measure the severity of individual events and safety level in a longer run.
  • Relation between flow, encounters, conflicts and accidents. Relation between exposure, simulated conflicts and accident risk.

The benefit of this research is the combination of the traditional surrogate safety simulation approaches with rich data and experience of the real-life observations available at the department.

Apart from conducting own research and taking part in collaborative research activities, the postdoc is expected to carry out

  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English. Knowing Swedish is a merit, but not a requirement.
  • Documented skills that respond to the topic description.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

We are indeed looking for a person with a solid background in microscopic traffic simulations and with interest in safety analysis. We foresee a person, able to be thinking “out of the box”, trying methods and proposing theories that might not appear as straight away conventionally within the traffic simulation community.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research
  • Teaching skills

Additional assessment criteria:

  • At least one scientific paper that after publication has gained substantial attention
  • At least three scientific papers publicised in well-known journals or high-ranked proceedings.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development. An important criterion is the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
