JOB SUMMARY:

Doctoral student (PhD student) position within the projectGenes and proteins controlled by cGMP/PKG in normal versus diseased retinas”. [This is the second out of two positions under the transMed project in Lund; see Ref. nr.: PA2017/4065 for information on the first position. We encourage interested applicants to apply for both positions, i.e. to submit an application for each of the two positions!]

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a position funded by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (MSCA-ITN) project “transMed” within the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union (Grant Agreement number 765441). The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of 4 years (PhD student) with preferred start April 2018. The student will be employed as a PhD student at the Dept. of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.

transMed is a four-year project with the overarching aim expressed as “Educating the next generation of scientists in translational medicine: Focus on eye diseases”.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

In medicine today, there exists promising basic research with respect to new and improved treatment ideas for many diseases, but the translation into clinical practice is lagging behind. This problem is in part related to a shortage of interdisciplinary and intersectoral training for life science researchers. transMed´s goal is therefore to contribute to such education of a new generation of scientists, enabling them to efficiently promote translational research.

transMed provides possibilities for so called Early Stage Researchers to, in parallel with their own project work, get important knowledge of and insights into the majority of necessary transitions in medical drug development, all the way from idea to product. Such steps involve: Basic research on disease mechanisms; Lead compound discovery and optimisation; Pharmaceutical development, including pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicity, as well as the production process itself; Intellectual property rights and commercialisation; Regulatory affairs and clinical trials.

The transMed network comprises 8 beneficiaries (4 academic institutions and 4 industry partners), as well as 6 partner organisations (1 academic and 5 non-academic). The all-in-all 14 participants represent seven countries (Germany, Italy, Sweden, Iceland, Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Belgium)

With respect to its part in the translational chain, the project “Genes and proteins controlled by cGMP/PKG in normal versus diseased retinas” relates to basic research on the disease mechanisms behind hereditary retinal photoreceptor degeneration (Retinitis pigmentosa). Using disease models the work will encompass studies on what the signalling molecule cGMP, which has been identified as a core component of the degeneration machinery, does in the retinal photoreceptors, with respect to downstream effects on genes and proteins.

The PhD student will be a member of the transMed multi-disciplinary team and will during the work in Lund be responsible for setting up, utilising and developing several biochemical and related techniques, such as immunoprecipitation and other analyses of phosphoproteins, western blotting, sample preparation for microarray analyses, histology, and tissue culturing.

SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate holds a master's degree (or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to master’s degree) in biology, biomedicine or medicine. A master’s project or previous work experience in biochemistry, neurobiology or cell biology will be beneficial. It is an advantage to have knowledge or experience within some of the following areas: Preparation of biological samples for gene and/or protein analyses; Biochemical separation methods; Histology and microscopy; Cell/tissue culture. Education in animal laboratory science is also an asset.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

We are looking for highly motivated, flexible, and integrative personalities, capable of working well in multi-national and multi-cultural teams. The project will require frequent travels as well as a set of research assignments to project associated partner laboratories across Europe. Prior work and living experiences in countries other than the home country will be considered as an asset.

Specific eligibility criteria apply for Early Stage Researchers in the MSCA-ITN:

The Early Stage Researcher candidate

-shall not have resided and not have carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the start of a potential employment

-shall have a degree allowing him/her to start a PhD thesis work in the country of the host institution (i.e. MSc degree)

-shall at the start of a potential employment have less than 4 years full time equivalent research experience, i.e. be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent research experience) of his/her research career since the MSc degree

-shall not have been awarded a doctoral degree (PhD)

Eligibility:

Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who

- have completed a second-cycle degree

- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or

- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.
