Subject description
The research is in the area of integrated circuit design, targeting transmitters (Tx) for systems using massive MIMO. This technique is predicted large importance for increasing the capacity of the next generation mobile communication systems, 5G. The spectrum of 5G extends into the mm-Wave frequencies. In this frequency range, beamforming and massive MIMO require so densely integrated radio front-ends that their performances are often thermally limited. Among the many heat sources within a radio front-end, the most significant one is the power amplifier (PA) which has to be sufficiently broadband to handle 5G telecommunication signals with large peak-to-average ratios, which places considerable demands on linearity and efficiency.

Work duties
The main duties in this post-doctoral position is to conduct research in the research subject described above. The post-doctoral fellow is participating in a joint project between Lund University and Ericsson AB, financed by Ericsson AB, where the aim is to develop and investigate Tx circuit solutions in CMOS technology at mm-Wave frequencies for better bandwidth, efficiency, and linearity, also considering constraints on heat dissipation. The design of integrated circuits, and measurements of fabricated circuits, are important parts of the work.

Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position includes the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Extensive experience in design of analog and radio frequency integrated circuits (ASICs).
Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:
  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.
  • Ability to conduct both theoretical and experimental research in the subject area described above.
Additional assessment criteria:
  • Experience using CAD-systems for integrated circuit design (ASIC).
  • Experience in radio frequency measurements.
  • Working experience in design of analog and radio frequency integrated circuits (ASICs).

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
