LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

LTH announces a post doc position for research with focus on environmental and energy systems studies of new biomass based production systems for polymers, platform chemicals and biofuels for new industrial applications.

The position will be funded mainly via research grants from the research council Formas within the call Forest raw material and biomass, and from the Swedish Energy Agency within the biofuels programme. The focus is on resource-effective utilization of locally available biomass as industrial feedstocks, and assessment of cost-effective, green technologies for their valorization with minimal impact on the environment. The position includes the development of life cycle assessments (LCA) of new biorefinery concepts producing multiple biomass-based products.

The projects will be performed in close collaboration with departments of chemical engineering and division of biotechnology at Lund University, and with a group of industrial partners.


Environmental and Energy Systems Studies, with focus on Sustainability assessments of new biomass utilization pathways.

Work duties

The main duties involved in a Post-doctoral posistion is to conduct research. Teaching may also be included, but up to no more than 20% of working hours. The position shall include the opportunity for three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.

The work duties include:

  • Sustainability assessments for chemicals, materials and fuels produced in future biorefinery concepts based on surplus agricultural and forrest biomass streams relevant for Swedish conditions
  • Assessments of sustainability in biomass supply and future availability, compared to present (competing) utilization modes.
  • The understanding and further development of calculations models, including life cycle assessment, for systems analyses linking technology, energy, environment and costs.
  • Understanding and interpretation of current and future national and EU policies and regulatory frameworks on the utilization of biomass for the applications developed within the project
  • Collaboration and communication with industrial partners and wider society on the above topics
  • Scientific publication of research findings related to the above topics

The work will be performed in close collaboration with senior researchers within the faculty, and with external collaborative partners. 

Qualification requirements

Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for applications. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier.

Additional requirements:

  • Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • An undergraduate degree in master of science in engineering or similar, including subjects related to chemical and environmental engineering  
  • Documented experience in life cycle inventory and life cycle assessment methodology during PhD studies
  • Documented experience of practical chemical and / or biotechnical experimental work related to the development of new green technologies and products during PhD studies

Assessment criteria and other qualifications

This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills.

Additional assessment criteria:

  • Experience of interdiciplinary studies of biobased chemicals and materials production systems with focus on new pathways for biomass utilization.
  • Experience of systems studies of green chemistry and green engineering with focus on environmental impact, specifically climate impact
  • Experience of working with life cycle assessment tools and life cycle inventory data bases, such as SimaPro and Ecoinvent 

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Terms of employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
