The Department of Philosophy has about 70 employees. Research and education at the department is conducted within three subjects: Cognitive science, Practical philosophy and Theoretical philosophy. Senior Researcher in Practical Philosophy


The Lund Gothenburg Responsibility Project (LGRP) at the University of Lund is interested in hiring a full-time senior researcher for at least six years starting in September 2018.



The Lund Gothenburg Responsibility Project (LGRP) is a 10-year project (ending 2025) directed by Professor Paul Russell. It is based at the University of Lund and the University of Gothenburg. LGRP employs and funds postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and distinguished visiting researchers as well as various research activities (conferences, workshops, etc.). LGRP’s mission is to become a leading center of research in this field.

LGRP at Lund is co-financed and hosted by the Department of Philosophy at Lund University. Among the most distinguished and largest in Europe, the Department of Philosophy employs more than 70 faculty members and has over 250 students at its practical philosophy, theoretical philosophy and cognitive science programmes.

Specific subject description

LGRP conducts research on moral responsibility and free will within action theory, normative ethics, metaethics, and legal responsibility.


Job assignments

The holder of the position will be given the opportunity to develop her/his independence as a researcher.

The senior researcher fellow will contribute to the research environment, especially with respect to foundational and analytic issues concerning moral responsibility and free will (broadly conceived). He or she will also actively participate in LGRP’s research seminar and other relevant research activities at the Philosophy Department. Additional duties may include fundraising and the project’s promotion through academic and outreach events, as well as teaching, supervising graduate students, course design, and other teaching-related activities. Such tasks will not exceed 20% of the position’s responsibilities. The holder of the position is expected to carry out her/his research in Lund and to be present regularly and consistently at the research group’s various activities and programs (workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.).



The applicant’s publications, teaching experience, and other academic accomplishments should be commensurate with those of a mid-career tenured or tenure-track faculty member. The senior researcher should be able and willing to coordinate and assist the work of LGRP’s junior researchers and work closely with the LGRP’s director and associate director in planning and implementing project activities.



A distinguish track-record in the research area relevant to the position is expected. Special attention will be given to the applicant’s publications and her/his research plan. We will only consider applicants whose research plan and prior work strengthen the research group and the project overall. Strong interpersonal skills as well as the ability to plan, organize and disseminate research are also important. Women and applicants from minority backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

Project plan

The applicant must attach a project plan of at most 5 pages to the application, detailing the research the applicant plans to conduct during his/her time as a senior researcher. This description should also explain how the proposed project contributes to state-of-the-art research on the subject.


Writing sample 

The applicant must attach three relevant writing samples. These should be published papers or book chapters which best represent the applicant’s qualities.
