The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics.

The Division of Synchrotron Radiation Physics (www.sljus.lu.se) is a part of the Department of Physics and has more than 40 employees. A strong focus of the research is experimental studies of electronic, structural and chemical properties of materials using synchrotron radiation, advanced lasers as well as high resolution Scanning Probe microscopy in combination with nanoscale engineering.

Work description
The main focus of the work is the implementation of the new lab-based setup for surface X-ray diffraction and X-ray imaging, including development of routines for data acquisition and analysis. In addition, the work includes synchrotron based structure determinations and reaction studies of model catalysts, such as oxide films on single crystalline metals, as well as operando imaging of nanostructure based electronic devices. As the experiments generate a significant amount of data, a large amount of data analysis including programming is included in the work. Independent development work of advanced experimental equipment as well as of software is included in the work. The work includes a significant amount of travel, production of research reports and presenting research work at scientific conferences. Some supervision of PhD students is to be expected in the work.

Qualification requirements
Appointment to a post-doctoral position requires that the applicant has a PhD degree, or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the last date for application. Under special circumstances, the doctoral degree can have been completed earlier. 

Additional requirements:

The subject of the doctorate degree should be in physics, chemistry, nanoscience, or equivalent. Very good oral and written proficiency in English.

Assessment criteria and other qualifications
This is a career development position primarily focused on research. The position is intended as an initial step in a career, and the assessment of the applicants will primarily be based on their research qualifications and potential as researchers. Particular emphasis will be placed on research skills within the subject.

For appointments to a post-doctoral position, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Teaching skills or related experience, such as mentoring, supervision, or training in equipment use.

Additional assessment criteria are experience/knowledge of:

  • Surface or single crystal diffraction
  • Work with lab-based X-ray sources
  • Programming Hardware development

Important personal qualities are, beside creativity and a curious mind, the ability to work both independently and in a group, and experience in the scientific interaction with researchers from other disciplines and in other countries.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor” (“Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow”) between Lund University, SACO-S, OFR/S and SEKO, dated 4 September 2008.
