LTH forms the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, with approximately 9 000 students. The research carried out at LTH is of a high international standard and we are continuously developing our teaching methods and adapting our courses to current needs.

The Department of Physics is with a staff of about 350 scientists and educators one of the largest departments within Lund University. There are seven research divisions and a number of research centra within the department. The research activities at the department cover a broad spectrum of modern physics.

The Division of Solid State Physics has about 20 faculty members and in total 100 employees with research focus on the material science, physics and applications of semiconductor nanostructures in electronics, photonics and biology/medicine. The division is at the heart of NanoLund, the Center for Nanoscience at Lund University, which is world-leading in the materials science and applications of nanostructured semiconductors. Established in 1988, NanoLund engages over 250 scientists from the faculties of Engineering, Science and Medicine.

Lund is also the site of two key research facilities for materials science: MAX IV, the world’s brightest synchrotron light source and the European Spallation Source (ESS), the world’s most powerful neutron source. Lund University, MAX IV, ESS and the surrounding ecosystem provides an internationally unique environment for the science, technology and commercialization of nanomaterials.

The Division of Solid State Physics runs NanoLund’s core, the world-class semiconductor nanofabrication facility Lund Nano Lab (LNL) that is part of Myfab – the national infrastructure for micro and nano fabrication. LNL turns over approx. 30 MSEK annually, consists of circa 600 sq. m of clean room with about 80 installed tools, including epitaxial systems, patterning and processing equipment and characterization instruments, and has over 150 users from academia and industry. Tasks and responsibilities

The Division of Solid State Physics, LNL, is now seeking a qualified Equipment Technician/Engineer who will be responsible for service, preventive and corrective maintenance on a variety of tools and support equipment, including chemical vapor deposition tools.  Another key part of the job will be hands-on involvement in installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of gas distribution systems. You will interface with students, scientists and engineers to provide basic training and support on equipment and gas related matters, reporting to the Operations Manager of LNL.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Routine preventive maintenance and calibrations on tools in accordance with equipment manufacturer specifications
  • Electrical and mechanical root cause troubleshooting and repairs of all equipment. Use test and diagnostic equipment to perform equipment checks, calibrations and characterization
  • Installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of gas distribution systems.
  • In close collaboration with the Equipment engineer, or, independently, modify equipment to improve overall process performance and equipment availability
  • Work with vendors for technical assistance and support
  • Maintain critical spare parts inventory. Assist in new equipment installations and with start-up and acceptance testing
  • Establish preventive maintenance strategies in collaboration with other staff members

Requirements and basis of assessment

The position as Equipment Technician/Engineer requires that you have a University degree in a relevant area such as mechanical or electrical engineering, or a similar education. The following documented experiences and qualifications are required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of technical equipment maintenance required – maintenance of semiconductor processing Equipment is a strong plus
  • Knowledge of basic vacuum principles and basic vacuum components, including vacuum pumps/gauges/valves
  • Proficiency in English including the ability to write technical documentation
  • Excellent communication skills

 Further, these additional qualifications and experience would be beneficial:

  • Hands-on experience with vacuum systems (high/ultra-high/plasma systems) – troubleshooting/installation/maintenance
  • Experience with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipment
  • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting on electrical/electronic systems e.g. power supplies/control loops/communication systems
  • Ability to operate basic electrical/electronic test equipment
  • Hands-on experience in installation and maintenance of gas distribution systems
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot gas and cooling systems to component level
  • Experience with compressed gases widely used in the semiconductor industry and knowledge of installation and maintenance of same
  • Extensive knowledge of gas and cooling related equipment - fittings/valves/regulators/MFCs etc.
  • Excellent understanding of the safety hazards associated with exchange/installation/storage/usage of process gases
