The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into ten departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1900 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

Job Assignments

The aim of this PhD project is mathematical modelling and estimation for analysis of time-to-event data, and other complex data, and application of these methods to real life data at the Lund University Diabetes Centre, at CRC, UMAS, Lund University. The main research goal is the modelling and estimation of causal effects, both genetic and environmental, on the mortality and morbidity, using methods from graphical models such as instrumental variables or mendelian randomisation for complex data such as survival type data. The PhD student will be stationed at the Mathematics Centre, and the research will be done in collaboration with the group led by Marju Orho-Melander at CRC, Lund University. The results shall be implemented in efficient and user friendly algorithms.


Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

Specific admission requirements
To be admitted to the third-cycle programme in Mathematical Statistics the student must have passed independent study courses in mathematics comprising at least 60 credits including at least 30 credits in mathematical statistics. A degree project of at least 30 credits is also required. Equivalent knowledge acquired through corresponding programmes will be assessed individually.

The PhD candidate should have a Master of Science degree in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics, at the latest within three months after October 1, 2015. Candidates with courses in and/or knowledge of Empirical Process theory, PhD level knowledge of Inference Theory and Survival Analysis are given an advantage.

Basis of Assessment

The employment of doctoral students is regulated in the Swedish Code of Statues 1998: 80. Only those who are or have been admitted to PhD-studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. When an appointment to a doctoral studentship is made, the ability of the student to benefit from PhD-studies shall primarily be taken into account. In addition to devoting themselves to their studies, those appointed to doctoral studentships may be required to work with educational tasks, research and administration, in accordance with specific regulations in the ordinance.

In selecting between applicants who meet the requirements, their ability to benefit from the course or study programme shall be taken into account. However, the fact that an applicant is considered able to transfer credits from prior courses and study programmes or for professional or vocational experience may not alone give the applicant priority over other applicants.

The following selection criteria will be applied:
Study record from undergraduate and Master’s courses or the equivalent. The breadth, depth and relevance of undergraduate and Master’s courses or the equivalent. The quality of the degree project and other independent work.Other knowledge and skills of relevance to the research specialisation.
