MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.

Will you replace Kurt?        

Kurt will be retiring after 37 years of working in the field of accelerators and synchrotron radiation, and we couldn't convince him to stay for another 37. So now we are looking for an experienced floor coordinator at the MAX IV laboratory to replace him. Are you the one to do this and continue his work of supporting our beamlines in technical questions concerning service, installations, or maintenance?  You will do that, as Kurt has done, partly based on your own knowledge, experience and skills, and partly by coordinating with other support groups at the lab.

You might still have many years ahead of you to collect knowhow and experience, but you are no rookie in the synchrotron world: You have experience from working for at least 5 years as a synchrotron beamline engineer, scientist or in a similar position with a deep interest for the technical systems at a beamline. It doesn't hurt if you have experience from several different beamlines or synchrotrons. You are familiar with many different X-ray based experimental techniques and their special technical requirements.

We believe that you have solid experience with vacuum installations and with various beamline commissioning activities. You may have experience from installing X-ray optics. You know your way in operating, commissioning and troubleshooting all kinds of beamline equipment including detectors such as CCDs, diodes or pixel detectors. 

In the age of computers, you recognize a measured data set when you see it and you have analyzed one or another in your times. You are not scared by operating equipment from a computer, even the command line is your friend and you know how to script simpler procedures in some language.

Solving daily technical challenges is something that keeps your mood up, and you show judgment even under time pressure. You can make decisions and implement them even based on limited information and in difficult situations.

But most of all you enjoy interacting with people from different groups, are dedicated to provide excellent service are structured and able to establish new routines. You enjoy being present on the experimental hall floor and you are excited about not knowing which challenges the day will bring. You communicate without any hinder in English, written and spoken.

We are asking a lot from you and offer you in return a key position at a vibrant and growing laboratory at the very forefront of the synchrotron community. You will work in very close collaboration with our user community, the different beamline teams and the various support functions. You will be a very visible person at MAX IV, both to the inside and to the outside, and you will to some extent define the exact future content of this position.

In summary, to qualify for this position, you must have demonstrated:
- wide experience of working technically at one or several synchrotron beamlines for five years or more
- wide knowledge in one or several experimental techniques used at synchrotron beamlines
- wide experience of vacuum installations and beamline commissioning
- experience of commissioning and usage of x-ray detectors and diagnostics
- ability to work with and understand technical drawings (in form of CAD-files)
- experience of computer operation of equipment and simple scripting
- ability to take decisions in a timely manner under pressure, even based on limited information
- ability to cooperate with other people in a constructive and service minded way

It is of additional benefit if you have demonstrated experience of:
- working scientifically at synchrotron beamlines
- designing or installing X-ray optics
- doing simple technical (CAD) design work yourself
- analyzing measurement data
